Census enumerators recorded the names of veterans of the Civil War who were living in Michigan in June 1894. A total of 42, 544 soldiers were enumerated. Of that total, 34, 946 were native and 7,598 were foreign born. In addition, 148 Confederate soldiers were Michigan residents at that time.
Since the 1890 federal census was destroyed in a fire, Michigan researchers can use this list of names as an additional tool beyond the census to document their ancestors' whereabouts during the 1890's.
